Dear parents and Carers,

Welcome back! We hope you had a wonderful half term and are ready for the lead up to Christmas! In this newsletter, I’ll give you a quick round up from last half term and share upcoming dates so you have them to hand.

Warmest regards,

Dee Seddon

Innovation

There has been lots of experimentation in KS2. Seals learnt about osmosis and diffusion through tasty experiments and Puffins and Dolphins have learnt about sound waves and frequency, experimenting with string telephones. Starfish have been junk modelling, creating rockets, inspired by Neil Armstrong and Jellyfish have been designing woodlice houses and will be creating Bee bricks! Y3 have learnt how to use their chromebooks and all of KS2 have been utilising these across the curriculum.

Community

Our Harvest Festival at St Peters was a huge success. Thank you to Reverend Mark Rouff and his team and our families who came along to support. It was a packed house!

Character

We have been considering the virtue of gratitude, linking to our harvest service and thinking about those people who will benefit from our school community’s donations. Thank you.

Academic

We’ve all been writers this half term! Starfish have been mark making and practicing letter formation, Jellyfish have been writing instructions, Dolphins and Puffins have written their own stories and Seals have been writing recounts and letters based on Friend or Foe. Maths across the school has focused on place value and the four operations so please practice key facts such as number bonds, doubles and halves and times tables at home.

Helping with Reading at Home:

Ask Questions! All reading matters. Shared reading is about ‘reading with’, not just ‘reading to’ (even for older children). So, ask lots of ‘Wh’ questions, such as Who? What? When? Where? Why?

Book Recommendations from Mrs Railston

The highly anticipated new novel Tyger by SF Said was published this month. SF Said wrote ‘Varjak Paw,’ one of our reading spine books for Y5, which is always enjoyed by the children! One of my favourites from my childhood! When Dave loses his favourite toy, Dogger, he is desolate. But then Dogger turns up at the school summer fair, and everything seems all right – until someone else buys him!
