Over the past couple of years we have been promoting reading. We want your child to have more than the ability to read… we want them to have a love of reading!

Imagine a primary school where over 7 or 8 years, children are read to, enjoy, discuss and work with around 82 core books. These ‘essential reads’ would be a store of classics, creating a living library inside a child’s mind. This is the ‘Reading Spine’.

The ‘Reading Spine’ has been created by Pie Corbett – a guru of children’s learning in English. His work underpins a lot of the ways teachers approach their work.

Please have a read of the ‘Reading Spine’ information. We plan to use the books in every year group over the school year. If you would buy these books for your children that would be brilliant. By the time they get to Year 6 they will have read 82 of the most fantastic books available to children in school and at home.

The teachers will be working their way through the books in the list in order. They will be using them as class readers, guided reading books and even sometimes as a focus for literacy work. We will be sending out information on how to buy through school soon. Until then, watch out for the titles! They are really popular books and you may have quite a few in the house already!
