Choosing the right school is a very important decision for a parent.

At Combe Martin we like to meet prospective parents so that a member of our staff can take you around the school and discuss school life at Combe Martin School. You can ring the School Office and make an appointment to meet the Headteacher and to discuss your child's educational needs.

Applications are administered by Devon Local Authority. If you would like your child to attend Combe Martin School please see the Devon Local Authority Web Page. This will give you all the information you will need to apply to our school.

For further advice you can either speak to our school administrative staff on 01271 883226 or the Local Authority's Education Helpline on 0345 155 1019.

Combe Martin Primary School is a member of the Alumnis Multi Academy Trust which is the admissions authority, responsible for the admissions policies and decisions on applications for admission. We have an admissions policy for each academic year. They are written to comply with the School Admissions Code and School Admissions Appeals Code. We take part in the co-ordinated admissions schemes of Devon County Council.

Applying to come here

Once you decide you would like a place in Reception or at any other time after this, you must make a formal application. You can do this by applying to the Local Authority and not directly to the school. A fresh application must be made for children who are attending our Nursery. Applications for nursery places are made directly to the school. Please see further information on our Nursery page.

For the Normal Round intake into school, children are offered places to start in Reception at the beginning of the September term after their fourth birthday. Children who are admitted to a vacancy at any time after this point are called 'In-Year' Admissions.

The Local Authority

Devon County Council publishes information about admissions and its own policies to support the admissions application and appeals process. This is at www.devon.gov.uk/admissions

Consultation on our Admissions policy for 2022-23

Below you will see a link to our proposed admissions policy for 2022-23. We are consulting on this between 1 November and 8 January and invite any parent or other person with an interest in our admission arrangements to read the policy and make any comments you wish. You will see where there are changes, the text is in red – either something we propose to add or, if it has a line through it, something we propose to remove.

One of the proposals is to add children who have been adopted from state care outside of England to our oversubscription criterion 1. This is in anticipation that the Department for Education will require this change for all schools as it has just consulted on changes to the School Admissions Code. It is possible that the Department’s timescales may mean that the Code is not amended before the end of February, when we have to formally set our policy. If that is the case, we may have to determine our policy without that change and then alter it later in spring or summer. We are bringing it to your attention though as a change in policy that we expect to have to introduce.

Other than changes in red and dates moving forward a year, the way our policy will work is the same as in the previous year, 2021-22 which you can also see below.

If you have any comments, you can make them to Devon County Council which is co-ordinating the consultation. Further information is at www.devon.gov.uk/admissionarrangements. You will be able to view the proposed policies for all state-funded schools in Devon and the Local Authorities policies there too.

The consultation ends on 8 January and all policies must be determined by 28 February and published in the same places by 15 March.

Objections can be made up to 15 May 2021 to the Office of the Schools' Adjudicator.

The Admissions Appeals Timetable 2020

The School Admissions (England) (Coronavirus) (Appeals Arrangements) (Amendment) Regulations 2020 apply to appeals that are submitted by parents on or before 31 January 2021. They amend the timescales and processes referred to in our admissions arrangements.

Appeals will not be heard at a face to face meeting. They will be heard by remote access – by video or telephone conference. Where it is not possible for a parent to take part by remote access, the appeal panel may make its decision based on the written information that is submitted.

A new deadline for appeals will be at least 28 calendar days from the date of the refusal to admit. Appeals will be heard as soon as possible after they are submitted with parents given at least 14 days’ written notice of an appeal hearing. Parents may not submit additional evidence on the day of the appeal.

The Admissions Appeals Timetable 2021

Appeals at the normal round of admissions to Reception will be heard within 40 school days of the deadline for lodging appeals on 14 May 2021. Where the application was not made in time for a decision to be made on 16 April 2021, they will be heard within that 40-day period or, if that is not possible, within 30 days of the appeal being lodged. In-year admission appeals must be heard within 30 school days of the appeal being lodged.
